Hardness measurement method for polyurethane foam (PU)

Post by amh »

The hardness of polyurethane (PU) foam is typically measured using a **durometer**. Here are the common methods:
1.Shore A Durometer: This scale is used for softer materials. The durometer measures the resistance of the foam to indentation by a specified indenter under a given force.
2. Shore D Durometer: This scale is used for harder materials. Similar to Shore A, it measures the resistance to indentation but with a different indenter and higher force.
3. Indentation Force Deflection (IFD): This method measures the force required to indent the foam by a specified percentage of its thickness using a 200 mm diameter compression plate. It's commonly used for seating foams.
4. Compression Force Deflection (CFD): This method provides an absolute hardness measurement by compressing a standard-sized specimen and measuring the force required.
Each method has its specific applications and is chosen based on the type of PU foam and its intended use.
